GP Q&A: Suncare with Dr Rina

60 seconds with Dr Rina, GP with special interest in dermatology - on skincare in the sun

Hoorah! We’ve seen glimpses of sun! We all know (hopefully) that some sort of sun protection is needed from now on - but the range of products on offer can be bewildering, and most of us still manage to burn at least once per summer! So how high an SPF do we really need for our ‘British’ sunshine? And do you really get what you pay for?

Read on for some quick fire myth busting and ‘real world’ advice from Dr Rina - GP with special interest in dermatology.

WGP: What do you think is the most common mistake patients make when choosing a suncream
Dr Rina: Most people forget to look at the star rating against UVA protection. And don't be fooled into thinking that expensive suncream must be better than cheap- it's what's inside the tube that counts. When picking a suncream, look for a five star rating against UVA as well as UVB protection. If your skin is sensitive, you should go for a mineral sunscreen (i.e. containing zinc or titanium) On the downside, this can mean that you get a bit of a white cast when using it - but we are playing the long 'skin saving' game here! It's also easy to forget that UV can still penetrate our skin even on cloudy days, as well as when at altitude. So don't even think about getting on that ski lift without creaming up! Final thought- remember that opaque clothing is always going to beat any sunscreen, hands down!

WGP: What do you think is the most common mistake when using/applying SPF?
Dr Rina:People tend to under apply. Generally, it’s recommended to have about 1 teaspoon amount to cover your face. AND you need to reapply every couple of hours - more frequently if bathing/swimming/towelling off.

WGP: What suncreams and factors did you use when you last went somewhere hot?
Dr Rina:Avene mineral SPF50 as I have sensitive skin and this does not cause irritation to my eyes.

WGP: What suncreams do you use in the UK?
I use the same in the UK as overseas, but in general the dermatologists' favourite is La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 50.

WGP: What is the best ‘budget’ SPF you have found?
Dr Rina:
Altruist SPF 50, created by a UK dermatologist. Full 5 -star rating and has both UVA and UVB protection. Available on Amazon!
